How the estimates work
From gross salary to estimated take-home pay
Gross salary is your pay before deductions. The calculator changes monthly, weekly or hourly pay into an annual amount, then subtracts the taxes and employee deductions listed in the result.
Progressive tax rates apply only to the income inside each band. Moving into a higher band does not put your whole salary on that rate. Allowances and tax credits can also reduce income tax.
Monthly and weekly figures are averages of the annual result, not exact payroll withholding. Read the calculation notes for the tax year, source dates, included deductions and circumstances that can change your pay.
Questions about salary after tax
- Are these results the same as my payslip?
- No. These are annual estimates for one employee with one job for the full tax year. Pay-period amounts are averages of the annual result. Your employer uses payroll withholding rules to calculate each payment. Your tax code, pay schedule, rounding and deductions outside the estimate can change your payslip.
- Should I enter my salary before pension contributions?
- Yes. Enter your cash salary before tax and employee pension deductions. Leave out employer pension, superannuation and KiwiSaver contributions. The UK calculator does not include pension contributions or salary sacrifice. Reducing its salary input can give the wrong tax and National Insurance result. The New Zealand calculator includes the employee KiwiSaver rate you select.
- Why are there deductions in a US state with no income tax?
- Federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare can still apply when a state does not tax wages. Some states also require employee contributions for programs such as paid leave. The result lists the deductions included for your state. No state income tax does not mean no deductions from your salary.
- Which Canadian provinces and territories are covered?
- The Canada calculator covers all ten provinces and three territories for a full-year resident who lives and works in the selected region. It includes federal and regional income tax, CPP or QPP, EI and other listed employee deductions. Check the calculator limits for age and other assumptions.
- Are student loan repayments included?
- No. The calculators do not include student loan repayments, including Australian HELP repayments. Child support and other deduction notices are also excluded. These payments can reduce what reaches your bank account. Allow for them before using the take-home estimate in a budget.
- Which tax year does each calculator use?
- The US, Canada, Republic of Ireland, Netherlands, Switzerland, Spain and Germany calculators use 2026. Singapore uses 2026 income assessed in YA 2027. The UK, Australia, New Zealand and Hong Kong use 2026/27, with different tax year start dates. Check the year shown on each calculator, especially when comparing countries. Each official source has its own check date.
